What I’m reading

Just wrapped up this book…

A friend picked this book for our book club selection this month. I honestly hadn’t heard of the author prior to reading this, and felt a little embarrassed that I hadn’t after reading about her.

The book, published in 1973, is fiction, but loosely based on author Rita Mae Brown’s life. It centers on the character Molly,  who realizes early on that she is a lesbian. Brown’s voice shines throughout the novel as she describes Molly’s life growing up in Florida in the 1960s. Molly’s sarcastic wit keeps the book moving, but you also can’t help but me sad at the scenario that plays out when Molly’s sexuality is revealed to some high school friends.  The reality of it makes it all the more heartbreaking.

On a 1 to 10, I’d give it a 6. I thought it was a compelling story and certainly, it was brave for Brown to write something like that in 1973.  But, I thought the writing could be a bit crisper.

On to the next book…
