A green monster and green tea

This was my breakfast yesterday.

Well, this and a mug of green tea.

I bought frozen mango months ago at Target and it sat in the freezer. I really had been meaning to make breakfast smoothies. I really had. I looked up recipes and everything. And then the mango sat there some more.

But, yesterday morning, I finally made the effort to do more than simply heat up a packet of oatmeal.

Ingredients: Frozen mango (Just eyeballed it, but I’d say it was about 1.5 cups), 3/4 of a banana (why 3/4? I ate the first bite and the last chunk had a bad spot), 1/2 cup almond milk, 1 cup spinach leaves, 1 tbsp chia seeds

Directions:  Combine mango, banana, almond milk and spinach in blender and blend until smooth. Stir in chia seeds afterward.  Drink!

When you get over the lovely green look of it, the smoothie is actually quite refreshing and you taste the fruit more than anything. There was a slightly sour component to it that I can’t figure out. It may have been the almond milk. As I’m not really a regular user of almond milk, it was the only thing I could think of off the top of my head.

Also, a few spinach leaves escaped the blender and it was a little weird to find those mid sip.

I tried to figure out the calorie count with the help of Spark. The approximate calorie count is 341 calories, 7 grams of fat, 33 carbs, 5 grams of protein, 10 grams fiber.

The addition of the chia seeds definitely gave it more nutritional power, adding more fiber and protein.  I think I’d try it again for breakfast or a snack. There are definitely worse ways to start the day.
